LEARN MORE ABOUT TERMITES
Subterranean termites are among the most destructive pests in Oklahoma. They live underground, often going unnoticed until serious structural damage has occurred.
What are Subterranean Termites?
These termites require soil contact to survive and are the most common species in Oklahoma and the southern U.S.. Though sometimes called “white ants” due to their pale color, they’re actually more closely related to cockroaches.
Subterranean termites live in massive underground colonies made up of:
Workers – Handle feeding, foraging, and damaging wood.
Soldiers – Defend the colony from threats.
Reproductives – Kings, queens, and swarmers that form new colonies.
Colonies can range from a few thousand to several million termites and are typically found in soil, tree stumps, fallen logs, woodpiles, and beneath warm, shaded areas near foundations.

Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover termite damage.

Worker Termites
Worker termites are the backbone of the colony. They’re blind, wingless, sterile, and can be male or female. Their jobs include building tunnels, foraging for food, and feeding other termites.
Soldier Termites
Soldiers defend the colony using large, strong jaws to fight off threats like ants. Like workers, they are sterile, wingless, and blind.
Reproductive Termites
Reproductives are responsible for starting and growing colonies.
Swarmers (Alates): Winged termites that leave the nest in early spring (April–June) to mate and start new colonies.
Neotenics: Secondary reproductives that help the queen or replace her if needed.
These termites can see and have two clear wings of equal size—often mistaken for flying ants.
Termite Behavior in Oklahoma
Subterranean termites are active year-round in Oklahoma. They build mud tubes to travel from the soil to wood, feeding on cellulose found in wood, paper, and plant matter. In colder months, they move deeper underground but continue to feed and grow the colony.
In spring, look for swarmers indoors or around foundations—a key sign of infestation. Swarmers shed their wings and are often seen crawling after they land.
